OnMaterials offers innovative materials solutions for the environmental remediation marketplace. OnMaterials' Z-Loy products
are engineered zero valent metal powder suspensions (zero-valent iron [aka zvi, nZVI], copper, magnesium, silicon, zinc, and others).

Effective in situ remediation requires that the remediation agent comes into contact with the contaminant plume. Infrastructure and
underlying geology many times limit remedy selection to in situ technologies. Z-Loy is a product that is designed for injectablity

Our greatest joy is to help you achieve success. This site pictured below had DNAPL concentrations of 1,1,1-TCA and TCE. OnMaterials
worked with the client and vendors to restore this facility to a working capacity.
This animation shows a contaminant plume growing for several decades. After the source area is delineated,
Z-Loy injection is selected as the remedy. In short-term, the Z-Loy rapidly degrades the contaminant.
Z-Loy is typically applied as an in-situ application in source areas or plumes. Often, the remedy
includes bioremediation amendments too. This combined approach uses both abiotic- and bio-reactions to remove
the contaminants. This is done for a combination of cost-control, longevity, and
product distribution. Z-Loy works synergistically with reductively dechlorinating bacteria by creating reducing
conditions, increasing pH, lowering dissolved oxygen (DO), and generating high hydrogen concentrations. So, in addition
to directly degrading the chlorinated compounds, the metal corrosion also supports better microbial health.

shortly after a loading of 5 g/L aged Z-Loy (2y 4m old) is added to a beaker of municipal water.
There are many approaches with the delivery, and Z-Loy has been applied in grid patterns and as
barrier material. Installation can be via direct-push technology (DPT) or as temporary injection points through
screened zones. Additionally, Z-Loy can be used in circulated reactor scenarios where an induced gradient
is created between injection and recovery wells.

Z-Loy is a sub-micrometer, zero-valent metal alloy powder suspension engineered for the in-situ remediation
marketplace. Key features include:
Small Particle Size: mean particle size below 250 nm
High Surface Areas: Tailorable from 1 to 30 m2/g. High-surface-area particles provide
enhanced reaction kinetics.
Biocompatible: often used as an amendment to bioremediation sites
Range of Compositions & Reactivity: Most metals and metal alloys can be produced including compositions more
reactive than iron
Hydrogenation Catalysts: All Z-Loy materials can be amended with Pd, Cu, and other hydrogenation catalysts

Z-Loy is a material designed for injectability, and is a fast-acting, highly reactive zero-valent metal engineered for
the remediation marketplace.
Particle size and shape
Z-Loy contains discrete, irregular sub-micrometer particles with a median particle size of about 200 nm. Surface area is typically
Z-Loy is packaged as a concentrated non-aqueous suspension. The fully water miscible propylene glycol solvent
is biocompatible and helps maintain the zero-valent metal interface. Other NZVI products are shipped and stored in
water; Z-Loy is not exposed to water until injection into the subsurface. Packaging in water is undesirable because
metal reacts with water to form iron hydroxides, iron oxides, and hydrogen gas. These reactions consume metal
and form insoluble oxyhydroxide matter that creates aggregates of the primary particles that can be millimeters in size. These
aggregates will create injection challenges. Z-Loy is designed to minimize this aggregation concern during shipping and storage.
Exceptional sub-surface mobility
Z-Loy contains discrete, sub-micrometer, and nanocrystalline particles. Conversely, other NZVI products
(chemically precipitated, thermally reduced materials) contain multi-particle aggregates of smaller nanoparticles.
Aggregates limit subsurface mobility and constrain subsurface product placement.
Z-Loy is a sub-micron material with a composite structure having a zero-valent exterior and a less-dense calcium carbonate
core. The SEM image shown in Figure 1 gives an indication of the size, morphology, and degree of discreteness. This
material has a typical surface area of 15 +/-3 m2/g.
Z-Loy is effective for accomplishing the destruction of:
Most common aqueous-phase halogenated hydrocarbons including
Chlorinated methanes, e.g., CT and CF
Chlorinated ethenes PCE, TCE, DCE, and VC
Dissolved and Free-Phase concentrations
Hexavalent chromium compounds.
Other metals of concern
The 2011 Edition of the Drinking Water Standards and Health Advisories published by the EPA
is a good reference for contaminants and their maximum contaminant levels (MCLs).
This is a long-acting microscale material that is used for water pre-treatment. This material is typically used to create
an environment that suits reductive dechlorinating bacteria cultures.
This is a dry long-acting microscale material that is used primarily for plume applications. This material has a tailorable
composition using iron, aluminum, and silicon. This material can be applied as an abiotic treatment, or in combination
with a donor in a bioremediation strategy.
The typical application is done using direct-push technology, where the material is hydro-fracked into the formation. The
combination of metals in this material provide good initial and long-term reactivity.
Z-Loy LA is synergistic when combined with bioremediation. The combined approach has many benefits. First, the metal
corrosion beneficially lowers the dissolved oxygen (DO) and ORP while increasing the pH and conductivity. The increase in
conductivity is the result of Fe(II) in solution, which promotes further electron shuttle activity downgradient. The combined
remedy therefore creates an expanding reaction zone with time as nutrient and iron ions travel downgradient with the plume.
Z-Loy LA is a valuable tool for metals remediation. There are many metals that afflict groundwater aquifers, such as
lead, copper, selenium, nickel, arsenic, and cadmium. These metals are treatable in the right conditions.
This is our fast-acting material that is primarily used for water pre-treatment for bioremediation projects. This
material aggressively treats municipal water supply oxidants, such as hypochlorite, so the water can be injected
into an active bioremediation zone without harming the microbial population. This material can also be used for pre-treating
water for bio-augmentation.

We strive to achieve efficiency on the job site. This is achieved by having custom equipment and processes designed for multi-point
injection. Our typical full-scale application uses a central mixing station connected to multiple injection units that operate simultaneously
and are independently controlled for volume and flow rate. These units are fitted with either hydraulic progressive cavity
pumps or pneumatic diaphragm pumps and are fitted to holding tanks with appropriate valving and hoses.
